Leaves appear green because they contain chloroplasts that are green in color. The function of these chloroplasts are to absorb sunlight and convert it into energy for the plant to feed on. In order for us to be able to see an object, the object must reflect light and in this situation the chloroplasts reflect sunlight and leaves appear green.

pigments are present on thyllakoid membrane of chloroplast and chloroplast is present only in autotrophs, due to presence of these pigment (chlorophyll a,b,c, xanthophylls and cartenoids) the entire leaf appear green in color. however the color of leaves of a particular plant varies and depend on present amount and composition of above mentioned pigments.

Leaves are usually green because of Chlorophyll. When leaves turn other colors during the fall months, it is because they have no more Chlorophyll.

The chlorophyll in leaves absorbs blue and red wavelengths of light to produce energy for the plant. Green wavelengths are reflected back outwards, giving the plant its green hue.
