Tornadoes have very powerful winds that, in some cases, are strong enough to tear buildings apart. When a strong enough tornado hits a structure fragments of it can be turned into high-speed projectiles that can cause even more damage when they hit other structures.

The Midwest sees many weak tornadoes that cause little to no damage. However, the region also sees more than its fair share of strong to violent tornadoes, some of which tear through towns and cities, causing massive destruction. The cost of damage can put great strain on local economies. Small towns can be especially hard hit as people often leave rather than rebuild. Farmers also suffer when tornadoes destroy their crops, livestock, equipment, and homes. Finally, tornadoes killed dozens of people each year and injured hundreds, many of them in the Midwest.
