Turkey joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1952, and was the easternmost member of the alliance. Under the Truman Doctrine (1947), the US supported Turkey against pressure by the USSR and communist movements in Turkey and Greece. US missile bases in Turkey were dismantled following the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963. Turkey is the only Islamic nation in NATO.
