Because they don't get hot, or emit radiation like a microwave oven.

TV remotes use infrared diodes to send the signal (volume up/down, channel up/down, etc.) to a receiver in the TV. Like the LEDs used in computers, toys and Christmas lights, the infrared LEDs do not get hot.
