Cobalamin, more commonly know as Vitamin B12, is an essential compound for normal metabolic processes within the body and, due to its water-soluble nature, is easily excreted from the body in the setting of high doses.

Many "energy drinks" contain much higher than the biologically-necessary amount of B12 (which is on the order of 2.4mcg for an adult) in the hopes that supraphysiological amounts may lead to excess energy production. While these claims have largely not been tested in randomized, controlled trials, these high doses are B12 are not associated with significant side effects.
