Hi Automatic transmissions like everything else require regular servicing. The bands in the gearbox wear as they have material on them just like a clutch plate or brake linings. Periodically these need tightening up or cause a bang when engaging. Secondly an engine that is idling too fast can also cause this. Check the Transmission Fluid level too while you are at it, somtimes a low fluid level can cause problems. This must be checked with the engine running. Make sure the selector is in park or neutral and that the hand brake is engaged before standing in front of the car.
Is it a loud thump like something has hit under the car?
it could be a motor mount. the best way to check is to open the hood and put one foot on the brake and one on the gas with the car in reverse
A thump word can be used to add emphasis or intensity to the sentence. For example, "The car came to a sudden thump as it hit the pothole," where "thump" emphasizes the abruptness of the car hitting the pothole.
Hi, There is a good chance that one or multiple engine or transmission mounts are defective or wore out.
It may be your CV joints
Check your converter they are known to can out seperate That happened to me in my 1998 Ford Explorer - turned out to be the differential. It started out as a loud thump, thump, thump, then just got louder until it sounded as though something under the vehicle was being dragged and grinded. It was incredibly loud! This all happened in a matter of about 15 minutes.

If it is a continuous thump (ie thump, thump, thump) that changes in speed with the speed of the vehicle it is likely related to a tire problem. If it happens when you hit a bump or immediately afterwards it is likely due to something loose or worn out in the suspension. If it happens somewhat randomly and doesn't seem affected by bumps it may be a loose piece of trim, or something loose under the car getting knocked around by the winds.
