The AC compressor is a parasitic drain on the engine, meaning it requires more output from the engine to run it. That alone shouldn't cause your car to run hot, but, combined with a deficient component in the cooling system (such as the radiator), it can happen.

Sounds like the thermostat is bad. I just had the same problem in my 2003 eclipse. The thermostat is located where the top radatior hose goes into the engine. You should start by removing the air intake hose. You should then see that the hose connects to a thermostat housing( It has 3 bolts and a wire on it). Remove the top hose from the housing and the bolts. You may want to use a catch pan because you will lose a small amount of antifreeze. You can now remove the old thermostat and put in a new one. You will also want to replace the gasket on the thermostat housing. The thermostat can be bought from any auto store. I got the thermostat and gasket for about $21.00 from advance auto. Hope this helps.
