It may be the ball locking mechanism(it helps the gear stick stay in place on not jump out of gear) that is found under the gear stick or on the transmission. You may need to replace or it could just been loosen of.
The temperature will keep the 1986 ford tempo automatice transmission to stay in first gear because this car was design for the cold. Changing the gear to early and a cold temperature could ruin the car.
it is probably that your shift lever bushings have worn out, but check the rubber seals and carpeting, sometimes they put pressure against the shifter making it pop out of gear.

if u are in a high gear no shift down because if u stay in the same high gear u will loose rpm as the car skids sideways causing a shorter drift.

When the computer detects a malfunction it will default into second gear only. Check the codes and that will give you an idea of causes.
