Yes, blood can smell and taste metallic! It's from the iron (Fe) in our blood, specifically on red blood cells. The iron is there all the time; it is required to bind the oxygen (02) molecules to the hemoglobin (hgb) which are carried on the red blood cells. When a RBC breaks down, it temporarily unbinds the iron (until new RBCs are made), and so, the metallic smell can be much stronger to the person. (Other people don't necessarily smell it on or about you, unless they have very sensitive noses.)
If you are a menstruating female, you may smell the metallic odor every month, or just in some months. It can be worse if you've eaten a lot of iron rich natural foods: spinach, kale, e.g. green leafy foods, etc. especially right before a period. During the longer episode of bleeding after delivering a baby, a new mom may smell this even more from her post-delivery menstrual blood since the RBCs / the blood is so iron-rich during pregnancy. Lots more iron is temporarily separated from the dying RBCs. As new RBCs form to take their place, the iron is again attached to the hemoglobin on the RBC. And of course, a woman loses some of the unbound iron during the menstrual bleeding. If a woman bleeds heavily, she can even become slightly anemic.
