Why does your car run out of gas when there is still gas in there?

The fuel sending unit is usually at one end of the tank, so if the car is on a slope, the remaining fuel will not reach the sending unit. If you can get the car over the hump, and therefore tilted the other way, you will probably be able to start the engine again, briefly at least.
