Why does your cat growl and hiss when you pick him up when he's never done this for over a year in the time you have had him?

There could be many possibilities, but one is that the cat had a minor injury and when you pick it up the injury hurts and it is blaming you for the pain. It might be a good idea to take your cat to a veterinarian for an examination.

∙ 7y agoYour cat is doing this because it does not want to be picked up. It may have an injury that hurts it when you pick it up or someone in the past may have hurt it by picking it up.
To address this first take it to a vet to ensure that it is entirely healthy. If it is OK, then discuss the problem with the vet and ask for the vet's advice about what to do next.

She'll have to do it on her own terms. Another reason why cats hiss/growl/meow, is because they are not comfortable around people/animals they just met. Cats are good source of character and can tell if you're a negative person.
