Why does your central airconditioner start blowing hot air only during daytime every three days and needs to be powered off for a couple of hours before it starts working again?

i'm no expert on this at all, but have had it happen several times, and always been the same problem (different homes).......it (in our case) was ''froze up'' if you go outside and look at the unit when it is not cooling you will likely see ice all over the coils, it thaws out when you turn it off for a few hours, either a leak or need freon......would be my guess ........hope it helps......
