Some dogs eat dirt because their bodies tell them to. This can be because of a mineral deficiency (not just iron) that is somehow improved by consuming dirt off the ground. Unless the dirt is contaminated by something harmful to the animal, this practice of eating dirt may actually be good for them.
If this is the reason your dog is eating dirt, it may be remedied by giving them the missing nutrients as supplements. There are a variety of vitamins and minerals available at pet stores that may replace the dirt as a means of getting what the dog's body needs. Look for natural WHOLE food sources.
If a dog is eating and swallowing dirt or sticks, it's a sign that something is wrong, e.g. the dog isn't being fed enough, or doesn't like his or her dog food well enough, etc. You might want to consult with a vet on that.
However, most dogs like to chew sticks and things they find in the dirt, but then don't swallow them. Chewing a stick is OK as long as the stick doesn't hurt them or shatter, etc.
probably because they are hungry or thirsty or just like it and think its edible
to get the bugs off then when they roll around
i think it does this if it is board of its food that you are giving it
Possibly Allergies, I know my dog chews her leg during the pollen seasons but I've never seen her eat dirt.
It Helps them digest there food
pugs are dogs, and dogs do NOT lay eggs
i love dogs too!
They can stay where they are as long as there is some where to lay there eggs like in dirt, mud, sand, but they don't lay their eggs in water. For example: the river (it have mud and dirt on both sides to where turtles can lay eggs.
well the dog gets in the dirt and than when it comes in it tracks the dirt inside
They don't necessarily kick it on the feces. When dogs kick up grass or dirt, they are marking it as their "territory".
some turtles do like a box turtle and a gopher tortoise do
Dogs are mammals, they do not lay eggs...
As far as I know, dogs are mammals, which mean that they do not lay eggs but breed from their bodies.
I think they do.

It would be a good idea to put down black dirt before you lay sod in any area.
