put a gate there that you can open but the dog can't Ditto, the gate is a great idea, like the ones used for children. But be careful, that your dog is not a climber, I had one that would climb over anything. I had to get the gates with just the straight bars, no cross bars. Else, she climbed it like a cat, but didn't land like a cat. That is not good, they can get hurt climbing, so be careful of the gate and make sure you place it where they can't use something else to climb on. Also, make sure the bars are close enough together that your dog can't get their head in between them. That can be terrible for any animal and you want to be very cautious buying something like that for your home.
