What would make the taillights NOT work on a 1985 prelude other than the fuses and the bulbs which are good?

There are several basic components that a novice "Do It Yourselfer" can successfully test with a inexpensive test lite and/or V.O.M. (volt/ohmmeter with the D.C. scale). First, remove the moulded plastic covers that protect the taillamp/stop lite sockets (located in the trunk and secured generally by one round "finger nut" that is approx. one and a half inches in diameter). Gently twist the lamp socket clockwise (as you are looking down at the socket). There is enough slack in the wiring harness to extract the socket and bulb. If the bulb is "open" (filament burned in two) the glass ampule will usually be discolored, dark or sometimes having a "black and grey" sutty color. Many times a filament can overheat and burn in two without shorting to the extent that the ampule is discolored. Look at the bulb closely. You will see three pins extending from the brass (sometimes aluminum) base into the largest area of the bulb's ampule. Connected to each pin is a very fine hair-like wire that connects to an opposing pin. If should see any breaks or gaps looking from end to end on any filament then bulb replacement is necessary. If you have a V.O.M., place your meter to the continuity scale (set the selector on the little speaker icon). Firmly touch one test lead to the brass base and the other lead to one of the two grey colored nipples on the bottom of the bulb. If your meter has makes a constant beep then that particular circuit is good. Repeat the same test on the second nipple. If you meter does NOT beep this indicates an open filament and the bulb needs to be replaced. If the bulbs tested good, re-install in reverse order of extraction. Next, locate the interior fuse compartment (generally lower left driver side dash panel). Use caution as many models vary as to component sharing of fuses allocated! However, all fuses can be tested in place. To test a fuse for an open condition (element burned in two as the result of overload or a shorted circuit), as you are looking at any of the fuses in the panel you will observe that the fuses vary in color from blue to green to red to amber. These different colors indicate the fuse's MAXIMUM current tolerance before the element in the fuse opens (burns in two thus breaking power to the load on the circuit). On the exposed end that you will be able to see, notice two small silver looking dots on the fuse's end casing. Set your V.O.M. to the 12VDC scale and place one lead on each dot at the same time. If you meter indicates 12v on the display then the fuse is blown potentially indicating an electrical malfunction. However, depending upon the climate where you live, such as areas where cabin temperatures can exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit, can contribute to premature fuse failure by thermal overloading. Try replacing the open fuse with a new one of EQUAL tolerance rating. **NEVER EXCEED the value listed on the fuse panel layout decal. To do so could possibly cause irrepairable damage to components on that circuit, even wiring harness destruction, and possibly leading to an electrical fire in your vehicle's wiring harness!!** Once you have replaced the blown fuse, start your vehicle and load every circuit by turning on your head lights, A/C, rear defogger (if equipped), radio, etc., until every option is powered up and operating. Monitor all operations closely. Keep your eyes and nose on alert for slight wisps of smoke or any smell that you know DOES NOT BELONG! If nothing out of the ordinary arises be sure to be vigilant for the next few days. Pull the new fuse after a few days to see if the plastic casing of the fuse appears to be warping or beginning to discolor, indicating more aggressive electrical diagnostics need to be performed. It has been my experience that few brake lite switches fail, but sometimes that is the case. If you have a question as to the switch's sealed contacts closing when the pedal is depressed, simply remove the white molex connector on the switch body (press the arrow shaped locking limb to release the connector from the switch). Use the same setting on the switch as you did on the bulbs. Place one lead on the upper terminal sticking out of the switch and the other lead on the remaining. If you can't hold both leads in place and press the pedal have an assistant push the pedal once you have the test leads landed on the switch's terminals. If the meter beeps, the switch is closed and should be considered ok. If no tone is given when the pedal is depressed, then the switch is: (A)Faulty or (B)The contact push rod is not extending away from the switch body enough to make the circuit (adjust by using the proper size wrench to turn the switch in a counter clockwise direction in 1/4 turn increments until sensitivity is achieved). If you are not confident and capable with your meter/test lamp, seek an automotive electric shop with a reputable history. Friendly advice: NEVER let any person deviate from manufacture's nomenclature by "dogging" a hot circuit with a "toggle switch to the old coin tray". You may wake up in the middle of the night to the fire department hosing your car or worse...YOUR HOME! I got it from one of the Honda enthusiast forms web sites.Page 19-95. but the files are a bit mixed up. A little searching and you shall succeed. My '88 Prelude Si 4WS had a short in the steering column. My "guys" pulled wires to a toggle switch that they free-placed in the coin tray. It gets hot . . . But, the running lights/brake lights work independently of the headlights!
