You have a coolant leak. Maybe a head gasket leak too, now, if it's been overheated. Run it (not drive it) with the radiator cap off, and see if there is any pressure in the cooling system. Just put your hand where the cap was (best with engine cold, of course). Take a look at the spark plugs too. The additives in the coolant usually form a deposit on the plug - you will see one or two that look different from the rest.
If the head gasket seems intact, refill again with coolant (engine cold, running) and try to find the leak.
If you haven't changed the thermostat, do it. Sometimes that's the reason for overheating.
