Because of static electricity. The bottom of the storm cloud is negatively charged and the ground (which you are standing on) is positively charged, so the static dishcharge( movement of static charge from one place to another) occurs. Like charges repel, unlike charges attract!

When you are charged, then every part of you is charged ... has either more or less

electrons then it should have.

Remember that like charges repel each other, so every hair repels every other hair.

When every hair tries to get as far away as possible from every other hair and from

your skin, the result is that they stand up (since they can't very well move sideways).

There a static charge going through the Van de Graaff generator, that travels up your body and through your hair causing the individual strands to repel each other and stand on end.

Is lightning a closed circuit?

When a lightning strike occurs, it has closed it's circuit, much like a light switch. Once the contacts in the light switch get close enough to cause current to flow, an arc occurs, all the way until actual contact is made. I maintain that the path of a lightning strike is preprogrammed, just before the actual strike occurs. The ground potential and the charge in the skies potential, feel each other and build up the power/potential to reach each other on the established sensed path. An actual strike occurs by part of the strike rising from the ground and the other part of the strike coming out of the sky, the meeting of the two culminating in the clap/boom noise heard when they meet. The lightning is a closed circuit as soon as the potential meeting of both ground and sky charges are sensed and before the actual strike appears in the sky.

Why does carrying an umbrella increase your chances of being hit by lightning?

Umbrellas, especially those with conductive metal frames, can conduct electrical charges from the ground, making a shorter path for any lightning discharge that occurs nearby. Non-conductive handles of plastic or wood reduce this danger. Given the very low odds of a lightning strike hitting relatively close to you, the increased risk is not very great, but it does exist.

Your tree was struck by lightning will it die?

It is possible that the tree may die if it has suffered significant damage from the lightning strike. Trees can exhibit signs of distress such as wilting leaves, bark damage, and dieback. It is important to monitor the tree's health and consider consulting with an arborist to assess the extent of the damage and determine the best course of action.
