This could be anything from a bad water pump, faulty thermostat, bad heater core, low coolant, bad fuse or connection somewhere. You did not state wheather or not it was blowing out cold or warm air when you turn it on.

Depends, the 96 and 98 have the same body style. Also in 98 is when the Explorer had a slight few different visuals. I think it should work, but make sure you have someone that knows what they are doing. Also, have a backup plan if the engine runs in to confrontations when installing. (Work = alt. means of getting to work) 95 and 96 year model explorers are one of their own, the wiring and connecters ecspecially for the trans for a 96 are alot different than a 98, youll most likely run into problems
