BEcause the Computer is generally programed to ignore the readings from the Lambda Sensor (Oxegen Sensor in North America) untilll the engine and the sensor warm up.
Once this delay passes the computer realizes there is a fault.

Need to know make/model/year, never seen a lambda symbol. The O2 sensor is a lambda sensor. If it is for that, it can give you bad performance/ fuel economy. In general if there is a light for what ever it is on the dashboard, you shouldn't drive too long with it on, for safety reasons (ex. tire light) or to prevent damage( check engine, low oil pressure light).
