If this is for a 1989 Mazda 323 with high miles (kilometers) and the sound is a creaking or rubbing sound, chances are good your front struts are worn out and will need to be replaced. If it is more like a grinding sound, it may either be the steering rack or coupling knuckle (U-joint). I suspect the former, because this happened on my car. Replacing the struts, plus lubricating the spring perches with Silicone grease cured the problem. Cheers Malcolm
