Tranny fluid is generally a rich or dark red color. If it is smelling burnt, then the fluid has gotten hot. Therefore the tranny has been worked and possibly overheated. If the fluid is still somewhat red in color, maybe slightly burnt, then change it now. If it is dark brown or black, then changing it is no guarantee to fix it. Some cars that have had dark or black fluid, had the fluid changed and they never moved again.
the tranny fluid will smell like burnt plastic bags and you will spend a lot of money fixing it
Cause its burnt.
It could be low on tranny fluid or could be ready to fail. It may also have a sticky valve. Take the dipstick out and smell the fluid. Does it smell like burnt rubber? If so then your tranny is shot and needs to be rebuilt/replaced. If it smells fine then go to your closest auto store and pick up some Lucas Transsmission stuff and see if that helps.
What do i need to do to fix my 2001 CL-S i only have 2nd and 3rd gears and transmission will not shift on its own. Also tranny fluid is NOT discolored or burnt. HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!
Brown fluid = burnt fluid (either dark brown or black in color) . In the early stages of slipping, a burnt smell will be the first noticeable indication.
Probly burning up the band or clutches = checks for burnt fluid smell/color (should be pink if all good). If you can smell a burning brake type smell...well there ya go = time to yank the tranny. If it surges with the cruise on at highway speed, it could be a failed tps.
It should look reddish in color for an automatic with no burnt smell.
The transmission vent is plugged with debris.
Man. or Auto. manual trans-- clutch maybe glazed or worn out.It is a 97 you know.Drop the tranny and replace while it is off.(release bearing too) auto trans-- check the fluid level and smell it for a smell like of burning brakes. The clutch may be burnt out.
It means the fluid needs to be changed. The burnt smell means the transmission has overheated at least once. Change your fluid and filter and hope for the best. Transmission fluid needs to be changed every 50,000 miles.
TRANSMISSION!!!!!!!!, TRANSMISSION. First check the level of transmission fluid and if there is fluid in there ( to check fluid warm up engine and check the level with the transmission in PARK and the engine must be running) smell the fluid if it has a burnt smell and is dark then you may have fried your transmission. A transmission repair can be expensive so please get at least three repair quotes. DEAD tranny man........
When an automatic tranny is overstressed ( high speed, heavy load, mountains, or just too small for vehicle ) , excess heat will build up. This can burn tranny fluid, which is easy to replace. It also burns seals and gaskets, which means a rebuild, which is expensive.
