Tranny fluid is generally a rich or dark red color. If it is smelling burnt, then the fluid has gotten hot. Therefore the tranny has been worked and possibly overheated. If the fluid is still somewhat red in color, maybe slightly burnt, then change it now. If it is dark brown or black, then changing it is no guarantee to fix it. Some cars that have had dark or black fluid, had the fluid changed and they never moved again.

Chevy transmission shifts hard?

It could be low on tranny fluid or could be ready to fail. It may also have a sticky valve. Take the dipstick out and smell the fluid. Does it smell like burnt rubber? If so then your tranny is shot and needs to be rebuilt/replaced. If it smells fine then go to your closest auto store and pick up some Lucas Transsmission stuff and see if that helps.

Why does your Durango transmission rev up in cruise control?

Probly burning up the band or clutches = checks for burnt fluid smell/color (should be pink if all good). If you can smell a burning brake type smell...well there ya go = time to yank the tranny. If it surges with the cruise on at highway speed, it could be a failed tps.

What does it mean if the transmission fluid looks dark and smells burnt?

It means the fluid needs to be changed. The burnt smell means the transmission has overheated at least once. Change your fluid and filter and hope for the best. Transmission fluid needs to be changed every 50,000 miles.

What does an overheated transmission smell like?

An overheated transmission often emits a burnt smell, similar to burnt rubber or toast. This odor arises from the overheating of transmission fluid, which can degrade and produce a distinctive, acrid scent. If you notice this smell, it may indicate that the transmission fluid is breaking down and could lead to potential damage if not addressed promptly. It's advisable to check the fluid levels and condition, and consult a mechanic if the smell persists.
