I suppose it's because Cthulhu is not widely known and for those who do know of it, they do not find reason in following him. Additionally, Cthulhu is a fictional cosmic entity in the short story The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft. It was most likely not intended to be taken seriously as a religious text, similar to how Carl Sagan didn't intend for his book Cosmosto be the basis for religious belief (i.e., Scientology).
I don't think Odd Future is an actual cult, but they seem to have gained a cult-like following; wouldn't classify them as a cult, still.

The phrase "a mountain walked or stumbled" gives a sense of the creature's scale. As for what happened to it...who knows they may be still lurking at the bottom of the sea in the mysterious city of R'lyeh Read the story by H.P Lovecraft titled " Call of Cthulu"
