Because Bob Ewell is a notorious blacksheep around the town, known for his violence and filthy drinking habits. The Ewells are very poor and live on the outskirts of town which makes normal human interaction very difficult. Besides being part of her outcast family, Bob would never let Mayella have any friends due to his controlling nature. all of this isolation is what ultimately drives Mayella to seek the companionship of Tom Robinson
