There are a lot if moving parts and areas that could cause problems in a 4 wheel drive system. Cheapest and easiest to do is make sure your hub lock system if functioning properly. A buddy of mine took his apart and put the spring in backwards do his president side wheel was locked all the time lol. Check that first, make sure everything is functioning and greased properly, and that all the parts are there. If that's not it, it could be transfer case, transmission, differential, all of which should be looked at by a professional.

With out the rebates, the truck would've been $42,000. So, that was the MSRP on my truck, an 07 Powerstroke. $42,000! Prices haven't changed much on Ford trucks since then.
