The Moon DOES enter the Earth's shadow from time to time. That's when we get a lunar eclipse.
In fact, there's an eclipse due in a few days from today (on April 14th or 15th 2014, depending on your time zone).
However, because the Moon's orbit is tilted relative to the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun, the Moon usually misses the Earth's shadow.

It is not.
Solar Eclipse
A lunar eclipse.
The shadow of the Earth on the moon's surface is the reason that it takes different phases. When the Earth completely occludes the moon, it is a new moon, and when there is no shadow, it is a full moon.
