If you are asking about "mean reversion" then the answer is that trading costs and capital limitations tend to prevent you from using strict mean reversion. There's also the question of what mean you are expecting to see reversion to, and how long you are willing to wait. You might wait 5 or six years for a mean reversion move out of the mess we are currently in. Who knows?
