The "autonomic nervous system" is sort of like the body's autopilot. You don't stop breathing, your heard doesn't stop when you're AWAKE, does it? Sure you can hold your breath - for maybe 90 seconds, before the autonomic system FORCES you to breathe, even when you're trying not to. The autonomic system causes your heart to beat, even when you aren't thinking about it.
