i know for a fact that it does not dissolve in 7 up because i just saw it in school today but my teacher said i would get full marks if i can find out why it didnt explode.

No. You can use three times as much baking powder, however.

It's carbonated - baking soda + acid has the same effect.

In essence, it saves you a step and lets your dough rise nicely.

This particular package of baking soda may have been exposed to moisture. That would cause the soda to solidify and not dissolve without being broken and crushed into powder again.
