It wasn't a crime or a sin, it was a transgression of a law. Adam and Eve were given their freedom of choice and the way into the mortal world (procreation, having children of our own) would require a choice to transgress one of the laws. Eventually they made that choice and hence, we all exist and now have the oppourtunity ourselves to make choices which effect our lives and future. Knowing that eventually the choice would be made by Adam and Eve to transgress that certain law, our Father in Heaven had already devised a plan to provide a Savior for us, Jesus Christ, who would come to earth and ascend to a choice that would provide the way for us all to return to our heavenly parents (thus satisfying the laws of justice via mercy). We now have the choice to accept or reject the plan of happiness provided by the Savior or not by the choices we make in this life. We all transgress laws every day that limit our freedoms and future choices just like Adam and Eve. Will we accept the atoning sacrifice of the Savior which atones for our transgressions as it did for Adam and Eve?
Yes, the punishment should fit the crime to ensure fairness, proportionality, and justice. Matching the severity of punishment to the seriousness of the offense helps to maintain trust in the legal system and promote deterrence.

It depends on what said child did, does the punishment fit the crime?
Making the punishment fit the crime means ensuring that the severity of the punishment matches the seriousness of the offense committed. It aims to ensure that the punishment is proportional and appropriate to the harm caused by the criminal act. This principle is a fundamental aspect of justice and aims to maintain a sense of fairness and equity in the criminal justice system.
