More then likely you need to replace the Thermostat.
Probably a bad ground, worn out resistor or damaged float that as filled with fuel and no longer floats in gasoline.

What engine do you have?
THere are 2. one for the gauge, and one that reads for the fan. the gauge one is located by the firewall, while the other is near the coolant thermostat housing.
