Nature creates a balance to prevent overpopulation. Animals that have hundreds or thousands of babies each -- like sea turtles or fish or frogs -- do not look after their babies, so that the majority die before reaching adulthood, and do not end up overpopulating the earth.

Animals that have only a small litter of babies, like cats and dogs, look after their young to a certain extent, but do not care for them all the way into adulthood, which ensures that some of them will die. And animals that have only one or two babies at a time -- like humans -- care for their babies all the way into adulthood, to maximize the babies' chances of survival.

Cats are placental mammals, meaning the young are nurtured within the mother cat's uterus, and nourished by a placenta.

The only egg-laying mammals are the monotremes, which only include platypuses and echidnas.
