Why are white dwarfs so heavy?

White dwarfs are the cores of dead stars that have been crushed into an extremely dense state by their own gravity.

Where in the universe are heavy elements made?

Light elements are made in light weight stars via stellar nucleosynthesis. Elements as heavy as iron form in the cores of massive stars. Anything heavier than iron requires a supernova--the collapse and explosion of a super massive star.

What the most dense part of the sun?

The core. It's where all the heavy elements have been created from simpler atoms.

What are some characteristics of stars that might account for the fact that some have more complex elements in their spectra?

Older age might account for it. As a star ages, it uses up the simplest elements (hydrogen . . . helium . . .) then starts fusing heavier and heavier elements. Our Sun will get to the point of fusing iron, which is pretty heavy, but the truly large stars out there will fuse elements much heavier than Iron. These heavier and heavier elements may account for some stars having more complex elements in their spectra.

What are the four smallest planets made of?

Like Pluto, the other trans-Neptunian dwarfs are likely composed of frozen gases and silicates, and few heavy elements. Mass estimates for such faraway objects use a number of techniques having varying degrees of accuracy. Ceres, which orbits in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, is thought to have a rocky core, a silicate mantle, and possibly liquid water beneath its frozen surface. (The unmanned NASA probe 'Dawn' will study Ceres and other asteroids when it explores the belt, beginning in 2012.)

What are the differences of fission and fusion?

Fission is the process of taking a heavy element and splitting it into two or more smaller elements. Whereas fusion is the process of forming a heavier element by fusing two or more smaller elements.

Why are white dwarfs so heavy?

How do we get heavy elements?

Heavy elements were formed in stars, and blown out into space in supernova explosions.

How are heavier metals formed?

The heaviest of all elements are formed by bombardment of two ions into each other ( eg Zinc and Lead) which then forms a highly unstable heavy element that very rapidly decays into smaller elements.

What planet contains the fewest heavy element?

Jupiter contains the fewest heavy elements. Unlike other planets, Jupiter is a gas planet, and contains mostly light elements.

What is the difference between star that become white dwarfs and stars that become neutron stars?

the simple reson is mass.......that is if the star under consideration is a heavy one, it is more likely to turn into a black hole and if it is comparatively smaller it is prone to turn into a neutron star or a white dwarf

What are inner planets made of?

What is SHE in chemistry stands for?

Super Heavy Elements

What is heavy ion?

A heavy ion is the nucleus of a heavy atom. Heavy atoms are those of elements with atomic weights around that of cobalt or greater.

How heavy is osmium?

Osmium is one of the heaviest elements known; it is twice as heavy as lead and 22 times as heavy as water

Where are heavy elements like nitrogen and iron formed?

Such elements are formed within stars. The heavy elements which are currently here on Earth were formed in stars some time ago, and then they were blown into space in supernova explosions.
