Best Answer

Yes,

The only thing that is not allowed to change is the number of protons (Atomic Number). Many elements have a number of 'isotopes' meaning they occur with different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus.

For example, Atomic Number = 1, Hydrogen.

It has three isotopes:

The most common, with no neutrons (Hydrogen)

With one neutron (Deuterium)

With two neutrons (Tritium)

What are particles in an atom called that have no charge?

Neutrons have a neutral charge. They do not add or subtract from the overall charge like protons and electrons do. They do,however, add mass to the atom.

What is the the charge in the nucleus of an atom?

The nucleus of an atom contains neutrons which have no charge and protons which are positively charged, hence the overall charge on the nucleus is always positive.

What parts of an atom are electrically charged?

Protons are positively charged Electrons are negatively charged and Neutrons have a neutral charge the number of protons and neutrons are equal so the atom has no overall charge

Neutrons add only to an atom?

Neutrons are neutral particles, so they donâ??t change the charge of an atom. They do however, change the atomic mass.

Can overall charge of an atom change?

Yes, ionize it.

Will an atom have a negative charge if it has more protons than nuetrons?

The neutrons do not affect the charge of an atom. The positive charge is on the proton the equal but negative charge is on the electron. If an atom has more electrons than protons it will have an overall negative charge.

Do all atoms contain at least one nuetron?

no, atoms don't have to have neutrons, neutrons are supposed to be neutral so it wont change the charge of the atom if you add or subtract neutrons from an atom. what will change is the mass number of the atom.

If an atom has 9 protons and 10 neutrons in it's neucleus and has 10 electrons what is the overall charge?

+9

What are the positive charges in an atom?

It means it has more protons (positive charge) and neutrons (no charge) than electrons (negative charge). This gives it an overall positive charge.

What is a particle in the nucleus of an atom that does not have a charge?

Neutrons are "neutral;" they have no charge.

How can a isotope change into a different element?

By changing the number of neuturons the atom is converted into isotope. As we know the atom is made up of electrons(negative charge),protons(positive charge) and neutrons(no charge),when we change number of electrons in an atom ions are created in the same way change in number of protons create change in the identity of atom and change in neutrons results isotopes

Does an atom with more neutrons have a positive charge?

No. Neutrons have no charge. They are neutral ... the main reason they're called NEUtrons. The total charge on an atom is not affected by the number of neutrons in its nucleus.
