Hatchbacks and estate/station wagons have a lip of metal between the top of the rear windscreen and the roofline, leaving room to install a windscreen wiper. The wiper mechanism can also be mounted below the windscreen reaching upwards, saloon/sedan cars have no room in either of those places.

The boot of a saloon also helps stop spray from the rear of the car reaching the windscreen.
