The War of 1812 was a side effect of the Napoleonic Wars. The British were boarding American ships and "impressing" [i.e., kidnapping] American sailors to man their ships. The War started in July 1812 and ended with the Treaty of Ghent in December 1814.
Eventually slavery was abolished in British colonies, and Britain took on the task of patrolling the high seas to try to intercept slaving ships of any nation.
The US declared war on Great Britain because they would not let American cargo ships dock at French ports. The British and the French were at war with each other. Also, the British were in effect "kidnapping" American sailors on the high seas and impressing them to serve in the Royal Navy.
The British did not recognize the right of people to become naturalized citizens of a country that they had not been born in. Thus, the British considered any naturalized American citizen, who had been born in Great Britain, not to be an American citizen but a subject of the British Crown. Since conscription was the norm in Britain for all male subjects of the Crown, any subject of the Crown found on the high seas was subject to conscription. In other words, if you were born in Britain, you were subject to the British military draft, no matter where on earth the British Government found you or what country you called home.
British impressment of American sailors into their navy. Durint the Napoleonic wars, the Royal navy was desperate for men. British law gave the navy the authority to draft men into the navy by forcibly pressing a shilling coin into their hands. Press gangs would go out and literally kidnap men off of the streets to fill the navy's ships. Navy ships could also stop British merchant ships on the high seas and press men from their crews. Under the pressure of war the Royal nave began stopping American merchantmen, and even American men-of-war, and pressing their crews. Needless to say, this caused great resentment in the United States. It was one of the major causes of the war. A terrible irony of history is that the British government had withdrawn the orders authorising the navy to sieze American ships just before the congress declared war but the news did not reach America in time to make a difference.

There were a couple of reasons. Britain was in the habit of seizing American ships and claiming that certain sailors were actually British deserters, who they would then press into service on their own ships. They also seized cargoes on the high seas, to prevent the cargoes from falling into French hands. They were deaf to American protests.

The battle is considered a British victory because the German High Seas Fleet never again seriously contested British control of the oceans. The British lost more ships, but many of the surviving German ships were damaged. This battle was anti-climactic and somewhat inconclusive. Neither fleet was destroyed, in any sense of the word.
A "maritime employer" would refer to any company who operates ships on the high seas.
Because of the overwhelming size of the British Navy, the German navy mostly resorted to submarine warfare which it did quite successfully. The one notable acceptation was the battle of Jutland where the German High Seas fleet attempted to isolate and destroy a portion of the British Grand Fleet. Thought the British lost more ships in the battle the Germans were outnumbered and forced to retreat. Their Navy never played a significant role again.
