A database to function effectively needs high speed access to stored data.

Floppy disks CAN be sued for storing a simple database, but there are some severe limitations:

  • slow access speeds means slow database response, especially if the computer cannot hold the entire database in local memory for sorting, etc.
  • severely limited storage space may limit the database formats available, as many newer database have considerable data storage overhead
  • constant read/write operations can wear floppy disks causing them to fail fairly quickly
  • data cannot easily be shared with more than one user

Older databases, such as Paradox, would happily use floppy disks for storage. Problems are likely to occur if the same was attempted with a modern database, such as MySQL.

There could be a few reasons.

1. It is a media that is no longer widely used

2. Floppy disks are easily damaged

3. With today's data storage needs, the floppy disk would not hold many files.

The floppy holds 1.44 megabytes, which could be easily be filled.

Floppy disks

Flash drives have replaced floppy disks as the perferred method of portable storage because?

They can hold more data than floppy disks and computers aren't really made with floppy disk entrances :)

How many floppy disc equal a 4gb flash drive?

You would need 729 floppy disks to hold 1GB of data. This is because:1 gigabyte is equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes1 floppy disk can hold 1,474,560 bytesSo floppy disks per gigabyte is equal to 1,073,741,824 divided by 1,474,560, which is 728.18 disks. This means you would need 729 disks to hold the full 1GB.

What are things such as floppy disks and flash drives called?

Data storage devices.

How did floppy disks improve computing?

Floppy drive was the first storage with portable data storage capacity.. However the data storing capacity of floppy drive is not enough but in early days it helped a lot..

What type of storage includes hard disks and floppy disks?

"Permanent storage", because the data does not disapear when the power is turned off.

What are some similarties between floppy disks and compact disks?

They both hold data They are both disc shaped A drive is used to read or write to them The primary difference is the way they hold data. The data on a floppy disc is carried and read magnetically. The data on a CD is recorded and read optically with a laser.
