Food is kept in the refrigerator for a several reasons, including
# To delay spoilage # To prevent foodborne illness # To extend the usable quality of foods that would not necessarily require refrigeration
A refrigerator is an easier and handier method of storing perishable foods and can extend the edible life of foods that aren't perishable. You don't have to have a refrigerator, but it does change the way your life revolves around obtaining and handling food.
The reason why some food is refrigerated is to help prevent spoilage cause by decomposition and bacteria. However it should be noted that while some foods are best refrigerated others should not be refrigerated because they store best in a cool (not cold), dry and dark conditions. While you would refrigerate dairy, eggs (they last 5 times longer this way), meat, and cooked foods other things shouldn't be. Examples would be garlic (the refrigerator promotes sprouting and destroys flavor), onion, potatoes (causes the starch to break down), bread (goes stale, but doesn't mold as quickly in the fridge), tomatoes (destroys the quality), squash etc.
keeping a fridge clean will decrease the likelihood of germ buildup in all areas. Defrosting the fridge will allow it to cool easier, in turn decreasing the amount of strain that is put on the fridges motor. this will increase the life of the fridges. The easiest way to defrost the freezer section of a mini-fridge is to turn the level to zero. Then leave the door open for about ten minutes. Using a plastic spackling knife, also known as a mudding knife, work the edges of the metal first. You can then wedge the knife in between the metal and ice by hitting the back of the handle. Soon, the ice will come off in large chunks. This only takes twenty minutes and prevents having to take a day to wait for it to melt and make a mess.
Refrigerators extend the usable shelf life of perishable foods.
In a kitchen context, a refrigerator is used to slow down the spoiling and decaying of perishable food.
So it doesn't spoil

First check that the refrigerator's thermostat is set to the correct temperature. If it is then your refrigerator is faulty and needs repairing or replacing. Please do not eat any food that has not been held cool enough.
Keeping hot food in the refrigerator will make the food cold. It will not damage your refrigerator.
in the refrigerator
A new refrigerator should ideally stand over night, to allow bubbles in the pipes to disperse.
It should be about 5 degrees. A properly functioning refrigerator should keep food at a Fahrenheit temperature of 40 degrees - which is just about 5 degrees Celsius.
The best place to thaw food is in the refrigerator, which should be set at 40°F or below.
This depends on your preference. A refrigerator can be set to 35-50 degrees but around 37-40 should be an ideal temperature. It will limit the spreading of bacteria but not freeze your food. A freezer should be below freezing which is 32 degrees.
Food that wouldn't be eaten should be put in the fridge for preservation reasons. The fridge will help keep the food fresh with the low temperature. The covering of the food also helps by keeping air (oxidation) out from the food.
