Cast Iron does not rust or corrode as steel can
Grey cast iron is good for machine bases due to its capacity of absorbing vibration. This can be explained through its microstructure, where graphite works as great shock absorber.
Cast means that the hot liquid iron is poured into a mold and then it is allowed to cool in the new shape. This is opposite of 'Forged' or 'Stamped', where the hot metal is soft but not liquid, and it is sort of hammered into the shape you want. Examples of common things made from cast iron: Some boat anchors some cooking pots and pans (the very heavy ones) some automobile parts (engine block)
if the cast iron consists of carbon in its free state then it is called a grey cast iron mechanical properties of grey cast iron tensile strength - 270 - 400 N/mm2 Brinell hardness number - 207 - 320 Modulus of elasticity - 1*105 N/mm2 poisson's ratio - 0.23 modulus of rigidity - 0.350 * 105
An engine block is usually cast iron or aluminium.
Spheroidal Graphite (Cast) Iron. As the name implies, graphite is present in spheroidal form instead of flakes and compared with Grey Cast Iron it has higher mechanical strength, ductility and increased shock resistance.
The engine block is cast iron.
This is the speed for sound in iron grey cast iron may be higher than this
A standard GT 262 mower has a cast iron block with aluminum heads. This design allows for a cost effective engine which is both durable and easy to work on.

The cylinder block houses the pistons and valves. It's located in the middle of the engine and are made from cast iron or aluminum.

As for the most of rough surfaces of cast iron, the color is grey. Such as normal grey cast iron and ductile iron. The ductile iron will be more white than grey cast iron. There are few types of vermicular cast iron, which are black. The white cast iron will show white color. So, cast iron has different color, such as grey, black, white according to different types. However, most of cast iron castings need surface coating, such as painting or electroplate, so they will show different colors than their own.
On a 1995 Ford Explorer : The 4.0 liter V6 engine has a cast iron cylinder block and engine heads
Aluminum is a lighter material good for racing applications but Cast iron is heavy but has good heat absorption Aluminum doe not dissipate Heat very well like cast iron. There is to my knowledge no such thing as a stainless steel engine block to expensive at least in a production stand point.
Cast iron mainly includes grey cast iron, ductile cast iron and malleable cast iron. As for ductile iron, it has very wide application, such as Pressure pipes and fittings, Automotive applications, Agriculture, road and construction applications, General engineering applications. As for the specific application of ductile iron, grey iron and malleable cast iron, please refer to the links below.
