The reason for the wet weather in the UK is the position of the jetstream, a series of winds in the upper atmosphere that drives our weather. This year it has been much further south than normal at this time of year, resulting in one low pressure area after another bringing often heavy rain to the UK.
What is not known is why the jetstream has been stuck in the same position for so long, causing weeks of unsettled, wet weather.
In the UK we want it to be as far north as possible so it brings up the dry weather from the south. If the jets stream stays coming in for the west over the Atlantic then expect a wet summer.
Though it can concievably be played year-round, Cricket has traditionally been a Spring/Summer sport, appearing once in the Summer Olympics in 1900.
It would be summer in the UK too. The UK and the US are both in the northern hemisphere so they have the same seasons at all times.
