The Olmecs were one of the oldest civilizations of Mesoamerica. What is known about the Olmec people is known from the artifacts that were found. In fact, the discovery of this ancient civilization happened by accident. A farmer was clearing land and he found a massive stone head. Later, 17 stone heads were discovered. Olmec means "people from a place of rubber trees." The Olmec civilization is quite a mystery. Scholars continue to study its origins and its mysterious disappearance. Still most believe that the Olmec civilization was the "mother" of all Mesoamerican civilizations. This means that it came first.
