Austin is the capitol of The Great State of Texas
because it is a big place like texas.
No. The state's capital was first in Wheeling. In 1870, the capital moved south to Charleston. In 1875, the capital moved back to Wheeling. In 1877, Charleston was declared the permanent location for the state's capital. The capital was moved once again to Charleston in 1885. In 1921, the capitol building burned and the "Pasteboard Capitol" was built. The present day capitol building was built in Charleston in the 1920s and very early in the 1930s, where it has remained since.
The Texas State Capitol is 326.6 feet tall making it almost 15 feet higher than the U.S. Capitol building. It is however not the only state Capitol to exceed the height of the federal capitol building. I have found some research which indicates the actual dome rises 311 feet while the Goddess of Liberty rises for 15.6 feet but have not been able to verify those numbers. Here is some additional information from the state preservation board. "An extraordinary edifice by any measure, the 1888 Texas Capitol is the largest in gross square footage of all state capitols and is second in total size only to the National Capitol in Washington, DC. Like several other state capitols, the 1888 Texas Capitol surpasses the National Capitol in height, rising almost 15 feet above its Washington counterpart."
Texas has the largest state capitol building by area. The original building itself has 360,000 square feet of floor area, more than any other state capitol building, but the 1993 extension, which was built underground so as to preserve the original building's architecture, adds 667,000 square feet of floor space. The Texas State Capitol is 308 feet (94 m) tall, making it the sixth tallest state capitol and one of several taller than the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.
How is it there? Well, it was established there (as Southwest Texas Normal School, then Southwest Texas State College, then Southwest Texas State University, then to its present name), and it hasn't moved.
