Because the average life expectancy has been significantly increased and there are a lot more people. If 2 people make 3 children and these children will find their own partners and create another 3 children with them, if all 3 of these initial children will do this, there will be 9 additional people on Earth. Now these 9 people will also want children, etc... So the more people there are, the more children will be made.
