The confedarate national flag went through several phases. First was the "Stars and Bars." it was a red flage with a white stripe through the middle running horizontaly, and in the upper left corner, 11 stars on a blue field. That looked to much like the American flag, so they changed it to a white flag with a Confedarate Battle flag in the upper left corner. That looked to much like a surrender flag, so the final version was the sane, but with a vertical red sripe on the right side. The battle flag is a red square with a white "X" going from cornre to corner from both directions. Insode that was a smaller blue "X" containing 13 stars. One in the middle, and three on each leg ogf the "X." The Naval Jack was the same as the battle flag, but it was rectangular, like a normal flag. So the confederacy had 5 oficial flags overall.

Why Did the confederate change the design of the battle flag so many times?
The design of the battle flag was not changed at all. In the east, in General Lee's Army, they were usually 4' X 4", square, while in the Army of Tennessee in the west they were usually rectangular, as is seen today. The flag design which was changed was the Confederate National Flag, the Stars and Bars. General Beauregard designed the battle flag because the Stars and Bars, on smoky battlefields, looked too much like the old flag, the Stars and Stripes of the Union. But the Confederate Navy continued to use the "First National" Flag, the Stars and Bars. But this looked too much like a white flag of surrender, and more confusion resulted. So the "Third National" Flag was adopted, which was the same as the Second but with a broad red stripe added up and down the end, so it would no longer look like Rebel vessels were flying a white flag.
