The Mexican War on Drugs (2006-present) is the reason. Mexican military and federal police forces have disrupted the 'status quo' between drug cartels, so these criminal organizations are fighting against each other and against the Mexican government to secure drug transport routes into the US as well as local drug markets. This has resulted in routine shootings and even massacres between drug cartels, sending 'messages' towards each other in the form of very violent and gruesome executions.

To date, there have been more than 30,000 people dead due to this conflict.
