The US developed a two-party system in 1828. Since then, there have been two strong, established parties, each of which nominates a national candidate and fund his campaign. It is very difficult, seemingly impossible to create a new party that has the national scope and the resources of the two established parties. If a new idea or leader emerges, what happens is that one of the established parties adds the new idea to its platform or nominates the popular leader.

There are several reasons why there has not been a successful third-party candidate for president in recent history. First, the two major political parties have established a strong presence and infrastructure that makes it difficult for third-party candidates to gain traction. Additionally, the winner-takes-all nature of the electoral system in the United States favors the two-party system. Finally, many voters are reluctant to support third-party candidates due to concerns about wasting their vote or helping the candidate they least prefer to win.

Was it true Ross Perot was a third party candidate in the election of 1996?

true... H. Ross Perot ran for U.S. President in 1996 as a nominee of the Reform Party. He received 8.40% of popular votes nationwide. While that number is respectable for a third party candidate, it's less than half of what he had achieved four years earlier.
