My guinea pig is a male and according to my book on guinea pigs males have a scent gland just above on their hind quarters you can see a sort of spot or mark (if your guineapig is short haired) and that is the gland (really grossly sticky so don't touch it). Basically he is marking his territory in case you were to introduce a new male to him he could show the new male who's boss!

Hope this helps!!

I can only assume there is some spinal damage.

This could be a birth defect or caused by an accident or disease. It could also be a vitamin C deficiency. Try giving the piggy guinea pig pellets with added vitamin C, and give him/her some vitamin C tablets (for guinea pigs not humans) from the pet shop if affordable. This may fix the problem. If the piggy is dragging its rear legs, I doubt that it is a spinal injury because they usually hurt the pig too much for it to move at all. I really hope your guinea pig will be ok :) best of luck.

My piggy is also paralyzed at the moment and I have to take her to the vet because she is in pain. :(

How to tell the sex of a guinea pig?

It is very easy. I have a female Abyssinian Guinea Pig. Between her back legs is a small hole from which she urinates. My sisters have a male American Guinea Pig. If you look between his legs there is a hole that well... looks like he is pooping you could say. But that is his male part.
