There are several reasons. First that comes to mind is fluid retention that is caused from a condition called CHF (congestive heart failure). Press on her ankle...if the impression of your finger stays on her ankle for a few seconds this is something you need to see your doctor for. it is quite managable with medications but needs to be addressed. another reason could be a blood clot. this also needs medical intervention, however in most cases there is pain associated with clots. Thought #3 if your wife is constantly on her feet...gravity works! all the blood is rushing down and collecting in her ankles. There are special compression stockings you can buy at drug stores or nursing supply stores that will promote circulation and lessen the swelling.
