It is largely because of a brainwashed public who feel they is not enough momentum behind other parties and so vote accordingly. However, recent political events may soon change this as more and more people see the Republicans and Democrats as being very similar. The Tea Party is a very powerful third party that may put forward candidates who can win nationally in the coming elections.

Third parties have difficulty mainly because of the mind set of the general public but also because many third parties have odd and unusual beliefs that do not fit the main stream of most Americans. In the past, the Republican and Democratic and even Independent parties have been good at representing what the people believe.

A third party is a political party that is large enough to have their candidate pull in at least 5 percent of the popular vote. It is so hard for 3rd parties to be successful in the U.S. because they rarely get enough votes to win an election.
