Nelson Mandela is revered for 2 reason's: his opposition and eventual defeat of the apartheid regime and his creation of the first multi-national democratic government. He was born into a country where whites ruled and 'coloureds' were segregated and this had existed for almost 300 hundred years and he was able to defeat this. After being elected in the first ever democratic elections he created a 'new' South Africa where whites and 'coloureds' were treated economically and politically equal
