Convenience & localization. An international big Tesco/Walmart coming into an area will inevitably kill off many mom-n-pop store. However, some will survive by hanging on long enough and evolving towards the convenience/localization section.
You don't want to go spend 30min searching for a parking lot, walk through long corridors and through a long queue just to buy a couple of loaf of breads, or cell-phone-top-ups. This is especially true on products with fixed prices.
Non-mainstream products like organic vegetables where big discount stores do not carry.
Some small retailers even sell milk-powder near or below cost (thus making them cheaper to the big walmart) to attract customers. Milk powder is something that every family with babies need. And when parents go to the small store for the cheap milk-powder, the store owner will get the chance to sell other stuff to them.
Premium sector (basically same as non-mainstream) where independent retailers specialize into areas that make them look better/upper-class as compared to the discount-stores.
